FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON ORTHOPAEDIC PROBLEMS?

Orthopaedic surgeons diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. Some problems develop gradually over time, while others occur suddenly because of an injury or accident.

WHICH ORTHOPAEDIC SPECIALIST DO I NEED?

Orthopaedic surgeons are experts in diagnosing and treating conditions involving the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. While every orthopaedic surgeon receives broad training in musculoskeletal care, many choose to complete additional fellowship training in a specific area of the body or a particular type of treatment.

If you're not sure which specialist is right for your condition, don't worry. Your primary care provider or an orthopaedic practice can help guide you to the physician best suited to your needs.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE AN ORTHOPAEDIC SPECIALIST?

  • Consider scheduling an appointment if you experience:
  • Joint or muscle pain that lasts more than a few days
  • Swelling or stiffness that limits movement
  • Pain after a fall or injury
  • Difficulty walking or using an arm or leg
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • Pain that interferes with work, exercise, sleep, or everyday activities
  • A broken bone or suspected fracture

Early evaluation can often prevent small problems from becoming larger ones and help you return to your normal activities sooner.
